From George Washington to Major General Johann Kalb, 11 July 1779

To Major General Johann Kalb

Head Quarters New Windsor 11th July 1779

Sir,

I received your favor of yesterdays date1—Capt. Selman shall be appointed to do the duty of Brigade Major; & as his, continuance in that Office will be only temporary;2 I enclose you an order on the Qr Mr Genl to furnish him with a horse.3 I am Sr Yrs &c.

2For Capt. Jonathan Sellman’s temporary assignment as brigade major, see General Orders, 13 and 31 July.

Jonathan Sellman (Sillman; 1753–1810) served as a lieutenant in the 3d Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp beginning in July 1776 and became captain in the 4th Maryland Regiment in January 1777. He transferred to the 1st Maryland Regiment in January 1781, was promoted to major in May 1782, and retired from the army in January 1783.
