1. The committee composed of members of the House of Burgesses empowered by statute to supervise military expenditures (see 7 Hening description begins William Waller Hening, ed. The Statutes at Large; Being a Collection of All the Laws of Virginia, from the First Session of the Legislature, in the Year 1619. 13 vols. 1819–23. Reprint. Charlottesville, Va., 1969. description ends 69–87) last examined and approved GW’s regimental accounts on 13 May 1757. After that date the money to pay the men in the Virginia Regiment no longer passed through GW’s hands (see Dinwiddie to GW, 16 May 1757 [second letter]). John Palmer was the clerk of this oversight committee.

2. According to GW’s accounts he received from Boyd on 19 Dec. 1757 £257.16 “by Captn Stewart.” This sum included his pay, table expenses, and the pay for two batmen, for the months of September, October, November, and December 1757 (General Ledger A description begins General Ledger A, 1750–1772. Library of Congress, George Washington Papers, Series 5, Financial Papers. description ends , folio 46).

3. Staunton was the county seat of Augusta County on Virginia’s western frontier.
