1. This may be Archibald Cunningham, a merchant who resided in Alexandria in 1773.
2. For the complications arising out of John Semple’s purchase of the Maryland tract from Thomas Colvill and the steps taken by GW and the other trustees of the Colvill estate to deal with them, see source note, Semple to GW, 8 Jan. 1770. GW was in Alexandria a number of times between 31 Dec. 1771 and 5 Jan. 1772 to meet with Thomas Montgomerie and others involved in this matter.
3. GW noted on 8 Jan. that he had “Receivd 563½ Bushels of Oats from Arlington,” John Parke Custis’s plantation in Northampton County (, 3:88).
4. In 1772 GW owned two other slaves named Doll besides the house servant of that name.
5. This is Dominicus Gubner, whom GW usually listed as “Hovenor,” or “Havenor.” See Cash Accounts, September 1770, n.3.
