From George Washington to William Thornton, 8 June 1793

To William Thornton

[Philadelphia] Saturday 8th June 1793.

The President of the United States is much obliged by Doctr Thornton’s polite attentions, and prays him to accept his thanks for the Treatise on the Elements of written language.1

The President is sorry to hear of the Doctors indisposition. A speedy and perfect recovery is wished.

1. Thornton’s Cadmus, or A Treatise on the Elements of Written Language (Philadelphia, 1793) was in GW’s library at the time of his death (Griffin, Boston Athenœum Washington Collection, 554). The cover letter that probably accompanied this gift has not been found.
