From George Washington to Thomas Jefferson, 11 September 1793

To Thomas Jefferson

Elkton [Md.] 11 Septr 1793.

Sir,

I will thank you to have made out and forwarded to me a Commission for the Collector of Annapolis, in place of [ ] Davidson, leaving the name of the person blank to be filled up by me.1

You will please to have the U: States seal affixed thereto, and countersigned by you, so that it may be sent directly from me to the person who shall be appointed. With much esteem, I am Sir, Your mo: humble Servt

1On 23 Nov. GW signed a commission for Robert Denny to replace Annapolis collector John Davidson. Denny, however, declined the appointment, and GW appointed John Randall to the post (JPP description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends , 257; Denny to GW, 6 Dec.; GW to U.S. Senate, 27 Dec.).
