From George Washington to John Adams, 3 March 1795

To John Adams

United States [Philadelphia] March 3. 1795.

Certain matters touching the public good, requiring that the Senate shall be convened on Monday the 8th of June next; you are desired to attend at the Senate Chamber in Philadelphia on that day, then and there to receive and deliberate on such communications as shall be made to you on my part.

The LS was docketed by Adams: “recd 12 March 1795 ansd The secretary of State 16th 1795.” Identical letters were sent to each U.S. senator (LS, to Theodore Foster, CSmH; LS, to Caleb Stone, MNFL; LS, to Henry Tazewell, ViU; LB, DLC:GW; LB, DNA: RG 59, Domestic Letters; copy, DNA: RG 46, entry 55).

On 7 March, Secretary of State Edmund Randolph wrote to GW, enclosing “a list of the summonses, delivered, and sent by duplicate to the members of the Senate” (AL, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DNA: RG 59, GW’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State). Most were delivered at the Senate chamber or at the senator’s lodgings; the LS and duplicate were sent to Adams by post (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters).
