Sir,

In your last dispatches were received two patents passed by the Attorney General for your signature, which I now return for that purpose.1 I have also the honor to inclose a duplicate commission for John Trumbull Esqr.2 The original went by Mr King; and to be with perfect respect, sir, your most obt servant

1. Only two patents received approval during the time of GW’s visit to Mount Vernon: one on 1 July issued to Luden McKechnie of Pennsylvania for stays to support the spine of the back, and another dated 2 July issued to James F. Mangin of New York for a machine to saw marble (see List of Patents, description begins Letter from the Secretary of State Transmitting a List of All Patents Granted by the United States, the Acts of Congress Relating Thereto, and the Decisions of Courts of the United States Under the Same. U.S. Congress. House. State Dept. 21st Cong., 2d sess., H.R. Doc. 50. Washington, D.C., 1831. description ends 464, 257).

2. John Trumbull eventually declined his appointment as an agent to aid American seaman (see GW to the U.S. Senate, 30 May, and n.1 to that document).
