From George Washington to David Stuart, 11 June 1784

To David Stuart

Mount Vernon 11th June 1784

Dear Sir,

A few days ago, I received the enclosed letter & copy of an intended address to be presented on thursday next 1—I have drafted an answer which I pray you to look over, correct, and amend as you may find occasion, & think best.2 Return it if you please by Austin, or Fanny Bassett.3 I am glad to hear Mrs Stuart is better—my Compliments & good wishes to her. I am with very great esteem Dr Sir Yr most obt Servt

1No such letter has been found. A committee of the Virginia house of delegates on 5 June presented to the house a draft of an address to GW, which was recommitted on 8 June and not approved until 22 June. See Virginia General Assembly and George Washington, 15 May–15 July 1784.

2GW’s reply to the address of the legislature is dated 15 July and is printed in the entry cited in note 1.

3Austin, GW’s “Mullatoe Man,” died en route to Baltimore in December 1794 (Herman Stump to GW, 20 Dec. 1794; see also John Carlisle to GW, 21 Dec. 1794).
