New York, 7 Aug. 1790. Encloses a recommendation of William Walter Parsons that he would have presented sooner if he had known of any appropriate vacancies.1

1. The enclosed letter to U.S. congressman Jeremiah Wadsworth, signed by George Phillips, Asher Miller, and Samuel W. Dana and dated Middletown, Conn., 20 May 1790, recommends “William Walter Parsons now High Sheriff of this County” as “a proper person to be employed in the collection of the revenue; and if there should be a place to be filled in this County, that is respectable and reasonably productive, we wish that he may have it. We would not recommend any man but one we are sure would fill the place with integrity and ability” (DLC:GW).
No openings in the federal customs establishment currently existed in Connecticut, and William Walter Parsons (1762–1801), the eldest son of the late Samuel Holden Parsons, did not receive a federal appointment at this time ( 1 [1847], 273).
