Sir,
Among the candidates for the office of Collector of the port of Annapolis is Mr Pinckney1—a young gentleman in high estimation among his acquaintances—He is a store Keeper but not an importer. He is a steady, competent & worthy man to whom the office might be an object & of whose capacity as well as integrity I have a very good opinion. I am Sir with great deference Yr most obt ser.

1. Murray was almost certainly recommending one of the sons of Annapolis storekeeper Jonathan Pinkney, most likely Jonathan Pinkney, Jr. (1768–1828), later cashier of the Farmers Bank of Maryland, or possibly Ninian Pinkney (1771–1824), clerk of the Maryland Executive Council from about 1794 until his death. By the time GW received this letter, he had nominated John Randall to the post (GW to U.S. Senate, 27 Dec.).
