From George Washington to John Jay, 1 March 1779

To John Jay

Head Quarters Middlebrook 1st March 1779.

Sir.

I have the honor herewith to transmit you, copy of a letter from General Maxwell, containing such particulars of information, as he omitted in his last, respecting the attempt of the enemy on the post at Elizabeth Town.1

I also inclose your Excellency a New-York paper of the 24th Ultimo.2 I am sir Your Excellency’s most obt and humble servt

Congress read this letter on 3 March and referred it to the committee of intelligence (JCC description begins Worthington Chauncey Ford et al., eds. Journals of the Continental Congress, 1774-1789. 34 vols. Washington, D.C., 1904–37. description ends , 13:270; see also Jay to GW, 4 March).

1. GW enclosed the copy of Brig. Gen. William Maxwell’s letter to him of 27 Feb. that is in DNA:PCC, item 152.

2. GW apparently enclosed a copy of the Royal Gazette (New York) for Wednesday, 24 February. At this time the Royal Gazette was published twice each week, on Wednesday and Saturday.
