Sir

Inclosed is my Accot which I hope will meet with your approbation.1 in Answer to your Letter handed me by Major Washington, I do not remember anything respectg the charge of the £100 by Mr Newton paid to me the 12th Sepr 1776.2 if it was I judge I must have paid it to Col. F. Lewis, this I suppose may be seen by applyg to that Gentlemans Books. I have been so long out of possession of the Books & the length of time it happened, that every thing I knew of it has slipt my Memory.

The Accots of Mrs Dandridge & Mr Frazer I will send ⟨by⟩ the next post.3 excuse my short Epistle as the post is ⟨mutilated⟩ waiting. I am with due respect Sir Your Mo. Obdt Serv.

1Hill enclosed in this letter three accounts with GW, copied from his books by James Quarles. There is a one-page account dated July-November 1772; a three-page account dated May 1775–Nov. 1779; and a three-page account dated Nov. 1772–Aug. 1778. These accounts appear in CD-ROM:GW. Another account, entitled “Memorandm of Cash receive’d from Jams Hill & Joseph Devenport On acct of Geo. Washington Esqr.,” dated 3 July–30 Oct. 1779 (DLC:GW), is also in CD-ROM:GW.

2GW’s letter is dated 12 January.

3The 1779 “Memorandm” (see note 1) shows the receipt on 23 Aug. of £872.2.6 “from William Frazer for por’k ⟨Setd⟩ by Hill.” In Hill’s enclosed account for Nov. 1772 to Aug. 1778 is recorded on 12 Aug. 1777 a payment of £50 “pd Mrs Frances Dandridge Order to Mr Custis.”
