To George Washington from Major General Horatio Gates, 13 October 1778

From Major General Horatio Gates

Danbury [Conn.] 13th October 1778

Sir

in obedience to your Excellencys directions I send the within Letter to The president of Congress, which contains the Letters of Earl Balcarres;1 a Report prevails that the Enemy have Evacuated Fort Independence, and Their Works at Kingsbridge—I have nothing further from Major Gray since the letter of the 9th Inst:, which I transmitted to Your Excellency.2 I am Sir Your most Obedient Humble Servant,

Horatio Gates

ALS, DLC:GW.

1Gates is replying to GW’s letter to him of 10 October. The letter that Gates wrote to Henry Laurens on this date, covering the letters that Balcarres had written to Gates and Robert Magaw on 30 Sept. asking to be paroled to England, is in DNA:PCC, item 154, as are also Balcarres’s two letters. For a discussion of Balcarres’s case, see Gates to GW, 9 Oct., n.2; see also Henry Laurens to GW, 30 Oct., and note 3 to that document.

2For Ebenezer Gray’s letter to Gates of 9 Oct., see GW to Gates, 11 Oct., n.1.
