From General Henry Clinton

[New York, N.Y.] July 18th [1778]

Sir,

Having promised my old friend Major General Phillips to ask permission for Him to pay me a Visit at New York, I have therefore to request the favor of your being so obliging to grant him a passport for that purpose, and that you will be so good to forward the Enclosed to that Gentleman.1 I have the Honor to be, Sir your most Obedient and most humble Servant

(signed) H. Clinton.

Copy, P.R.O., 30/55, Carleton Papers. The copy is docketed in part, “sent by a Flag of Truce—the 31st July 1778.”

1A copy of the enclosure, a letter from Clinton to Maj. Gen. William Phillips of this date, is in P.R.O., 30/55, Carleton Papers. GW sent it to Phillips with his letter of 16 August.
