1Capt. George Walker, master of the ship York, entered York River on 28 Jan. 1760. The address on the cover of the copy of the letter in the Custis Papers is to GW “York Virginia ⅌ the George Capt. Chew.”

2These were the hogsheads that Martha Custis sent in 1758 aboard the Anna, which was captured by the French and then recaptured. See GW to Capel & Osgood Hanbury, 12 June 1759, n.4.

3The text reads “a ssoone.”

5Martha Custis drew a bill of £250 on the Hanburys on 16 May 1758 in favor of Thomas Moore. See Settlement of the Daniel Parke Custis Estate, 20 April 1759–5 Nov. 1761, doc. III-B, nn.21 and 28. The Hanburys’ account current is dated 1 Sept. 1759 (GW to Capel & Osgood Hanbury, 12 June 1759, n.7).
