Philadelphia July 19. 1794.
The Secretary of State has the honor of inclosing to the President an account of expenditures at the mint, this day forwarded by the Director;1 and to request his instructions as to the warrant, asked for.2

1. The enclosed account showed a debit of $1,675.40 "for the purchase of Copper and for Expenditures from the 24th April to the 30th June 1794 inclusive," and two credits, $440.07 for "Cash transferd by the late Treasurer of the Mint" and $400 from "Warrant No. 3769 from the Secty of the Treasury dated 19th June 1794," leaving a balance of $835.33 due to Mint Treasurer Nicholas Way (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters).
2. In his letter to Randolph, David Rittenhouse stated that the account balance had "been advanced by me & not by the Treasurer," and he continued, "You will oblige me by applying to the President for his warrant for that sum, including, if it shall be thought proper a further sum of 1000. Drs to enable the Treasurer to pay the current expences of the present quarter. I have however not the least objection to advancing the money until the close of the Quarter if that Mode is approved of" (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters).
GW wrote to Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton on this date, "Pay to The Director of the Mint, one thousand eight hundred & thirty five Dollars and thirty three Cents, to be applied to the purposes of that Establishment" (LB, DLC:GW).
