New-York 2 November 1787

My dear Sir

The bearer the Marquis de Chappedelaine has been made known to me by my old friend Colo. Mauduit duplessi. The Marquis who is an officer in the service of his most christian Majesty thinks that he should have come to America to little purpose were he to depart without having seen your Excellency, I therefore take the liberty of introducing him to your attention.1 I am with the most perfect respect my dear Sir Your Most obedient humble Servant

1. Chappedelaine and several men from Alexandria were among those who dined with GW at Mount Vernon on 13 Feb. 1788. Julien-Joseph Hyacinth de Chappedelaine (c.1754-1794) was later involved in a project to settle Sapelo and Jekyll islands on the Georgia coast (see Hyacinth de Chappedelaine to GW, 9 Jan. 1791.
