Dear Sir
On my return from a journey after an absence of three weeks, I found here the roll of diplomas which you had forwarded: and have made it my first duty to sign them, and return them by our first mail. hoping they will get safe to hand I avail myself of the occasion of assuring you of my friendship & respect.

TJ returned signed American Philosophical Society membership diplomas, specimens of which include that of Nicholas Biddle, 16 Apr. 1813, cited above at Biddle to TJ, 12 Dec. 1809, the ornithologist Alexander Wilson, 16 Apr. 1813 (MS in NjMoHP: Lloyd W. Smith Collection; printed form with blanks filled in; signed by TJ and seven other officers), and Rev. James P. Wilson, 15 Apr. 1814 (MS in PPAmP: Archives, Manuscript Communications; printed form with blanks filled in; signed by TJ and seven other officers). The Biddle certificate is reproduced elsewhere in this volume.
