From George Washington to John Vaughan, 27 December 1791

To John Vaughan

[Philadelphia] 27th Decr 1791

Dear Sir

I thank you for having given me the perusal of the letter herewith returned. Lamentable! to see such a spirit of revolt among the Blacks. Where it will stop, is difficult to say.1 Yours sincerely

Go: Washington

ALS, PPAmP: Madeira-Vaughan Collection.

Philadelphia merchant John Vaughan (1756–1841) was a son of Samuel Vaughan, who owned estates in the Caribbean islands. John Vaughan’s later purchase of one of Gilbert Stuart’s original portraits of GW gave his name to a particular type of Stuart portrait of GW.

1John Vaughan wrote GW this day: “The enclosed has this moment reached my hands & as I Conceive this perusal may be interesting I have taken the liberty to enclose it” (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters). The enclosure about the Saint Domingue slave uprisings has not been identified.
