John Vaughan to Thomas Jefferson, 28 May 1814

From John Vaughan

Philad. 28 May 1814

D sir

My particular friend Mr Nicholas Biddle, with his Lady, daughter of the late Mrs Craig, are travelling to some of the springs in Your State, to reestablish health & tranquility of mind, which had been much affected by their late Domestic afflictions—Should they have the opportunity—I should feel gratified at being the means of bringing you personally acquainted—Mr Biddle’s tour to Europe has led him to appreciate more correctly, the Otium cum Dignitate which Monticello affords, & Mrs B with a taste formed by that of her accomplished mother will not be less pleased with your elegant retirement—With regret that I cannot Indulge myself by a similar gratification I remain D sir

Your friend & sert

Jn Vaughan

RC (DLC: Nicholas Biddle Papers); addressed: “Thomas Jefferson Monticello.” Not recorded in SJL and probably never received by TJ.

Jane Margaret Craig Biddle (1793–1856) was the daughter of John and Margaret Murphy Craig. She was raised and educated in Philadelphia and at Andalusia, her family’s estate in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She married Nicholas Biddle in 1811, and their family eventually took up residence at Andalusia (Nicholas B. Wainwright, “Andalusia, Countryseat of the Craig Family and of Nicholas Biddle and His Descendants,” PMHB description begins Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1877–  description ends 101 [1977]: 18–27; ANB description begins John A. Garraty and Mark C. Carnes, eds., American National Biography, 1999, 24 vols. description ends , 2:734–6; Washington Daily National Intelligencer, 15 Aug. 1856; gravestone inscription in Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church cemetery, Philadelphia).

The Biddle family’s late domestic afflictions included the death on 28 Jan. 1814 of Margaret Murphy Craig (Port Folio 3 [1814]: 284–9).
