From Major General William Thompson

Albany. 2 May. 1776

Sir.

I receivd Col. Moylan’s Letter and send you inclosed a state of the accounts he mentions.1

On Sunday I went to Half-Moon to forward the march of the Troops from thence, and waited ’till Col. Patterson’s Regiment had march’d—Col. Greaton’s had march’d before I came there, and I met Bond’s near half-Moon. Part of Col. Poor’s Regimt went on Tuesday, and the remainder yesterday.2 The whole party, Carpenters &c. are now gone from hence, and I am just ready to set out, & hope in a very short time to have them in Quebec.

If the Surgeons inform me right there is not ten Pounds, worth of Medicines with the four Regiments, and must request you will order Doctor Morgan to send a small Chest to each. I shall write you from the Lakes, and am Yr Excellency’s Most obt Hble Servt

Wm Thompson

ALS, MH: Palfrey Family Papers.

1Stephen Moylan wrote to Thompson from New York on 28 April: “The Committee of Safety of this place have Exhibited an account against the Continent and amongst Other sums there is 120£ Charged as being Advanced to you—the General has forgot What Passd between you & him in Respect to the Disposal of that Money[.] he therefore Requests the favour of you to Inform him the Reason as soon as possible” (DLC:GW). The undated account that Thompson enclosed shows that he spent £96.0.6 of the £120 that was loaned him in March while he was acting commander in New York. He paid £60 to engineer William Smith, £20 to Capt. Stephen Badlam of the artillery, and £16.0.6 to Dr. Alexander Stewart for medicines and attendance on sick soldiers. Thompson left the balance of £23.19.6 and the receipts for his disbursements in New York to be delivered to the colony’s treasurer, Peter Van Brugh Livingston (DLC:GW).

2The previous Sunday was 28 April, and Tuesday was 30 April.
