To Thomas Jefferson from Robert Smith, 19 February 1803
From Robert Smith
[19 Feb. 1803]
The Secretary of the Navy has not deemed it expedient to write the proposed letter to Jacob Bauldin because he cannot ascertain that such a person is in the City or in Geo. Town. It is, besides, believed that such a person, if worthy of attention, would present himself in person—He certainly ought to do so—
RC (DLC); undated; addressed: “The President”; endorsed by TJ as received from the Navy Department on 19 Feb. and “Bauldin” and so recorded in SJL as a letter of 19 Feb.
A letter from jacob bauldin to TJ, dated 15 Feb. 1803 from Washington, is recorded in SJL as received 17 Feb. with the notation “N,” but has not been found.
