From Isaac Sherman

New York, September 7, 1796. “I have not been able to get money to pay my rent for the quarter which became due on the first day of august last, amounting to thirteen pounds fifteen shillings, and the Landlord is extreamly pressing for the money, I have therefore no other alternative than to refer him to you for the money.…”1

ALS, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress.

1Under the date of September 7, 1796, the following entry appears in H’s Cash Book, 1795–1804: “Account of Donations Dr. to Cash for this sum paid on account of rent for Isaac Sherman 37.50.” A second entry on January 14, 1797, reads “Account of Donations for paid ballance of indem for Rent for I Sherman 12.50” (AD, Hamilton Papers, Library of Congress).

On other occasions H had loaned money to Sherman. See Sherman to H, October 16, 1790; January 23, 1792.
