Le S. Cher. [Sieur Chevalier] Bernard de Marigny, Monsieur, qui vous a écrit la lettre que vous me renvoyez est un Officier qui jouit d’une tres bonne Reputation et votre recommandation en sa faveur ne peut qu’ajouter au desir que j’ai de lui procurer les graces dont ses services sont susceptibles.5

5. Charles-René-Louis, chevalier and later vicomte de Bernard de Marigny had commanded the frigate Sensible, which brought Simeon Deane back to America in 1778 with the French treaties: XXVI, 72n. BF’s letters on the chevalier’s behalf are missing, but on March 19, 1779 (APS), Marigny thanked BF, attributing to him a major share in Marigny’s promotion to the rank of capitaine de vaisseau. With such a rank he was eligible to command a ship of the line, and in 1780 he returned to America as captain of the Ardent, 64: Howard C. Rice, Jr., and Anne S. K.
