E. E. Robt Cary & Co.

ALB, DLC:GW. GW received invoices of this date from Cary for goods for the York River plantations (directed to Joseph Valentine), for John Parke Custis, for Martha Parke Custis, and for Mrs. Frances Dandridge (all DLC:GW).

GW ordered these goods with his invoice of 27 Sept. 1763 and his letters to John Didsbury and to Charles Lawrence, 27 Sept., 24 Oct. 1763 [1] [2].

GW wrote after “Spades,” probably inadvertently, the letter “c.”

A fearnought was a heavy woolen cheviot.

GW (and perhaps Cary) spells her name Vaughton in Cary’s invoice of 31 Mar. 1761.

A saque, or sack, was sometimes a train to be attached to a dress instead of a loose gown. Pompadour was a shade of red.

Ibbetson, Tasker, & Padgett were mercers at the Wheatsheaf on Ludgate Hill.

For further references to the tea kettle, see GW’s invoice to Cary, 10 Aug. 1764.

“Susanh Coleman, Breeches Maker at the Buck & Breeches on the Pavement without great Moorgate” (receipt, 1765, ViHi: Custis Papers).

Edward Polhill was an upholsterer at 7 Watling Street.

James Maidment was proprietor of the Staffordshire Stone, and of the Glass Warehouse, south side of St. Paul’s churchyard.

Samuel Lowe had a glasshouse in Southwark.

Mixture was a woolen cloth woven of different colored threads.
