From John Jay to Timothy Pickering, 19 April 1798

To Timothy Pickering (private)

Albany 19 Ap. 1798

Dr Sr.

I am very much gratified by your friendly attention in sending me the Copies of the Dispatches from, and of the Instructions to, our Envoys at Paris, which came enclosed in your Letters of the 9 and 11 Instant.1

The Demands and Language of the French Government will form an extraordinary Page in modern History; and however palliated or expounded, cannot fail to excite the Indignation of honest Men in this and every other Country. More Time than has as yet elapsed, is necessary to ascertain their general Effect on the public mind— for my own part I suspect there is too much Reason to infer from certain Declarations that some of the Leaders of the antifœderal party will continue to be impelled by private Interest as well as party Zeal to adopt and persevere in reprehensible Measures — many well meaning People err for want of knowing the Truth—but there are others to whom this Remark is not applicable—

The Instructions are in my opinion ably drawn, and do Honor to the administration. The publication of them will certainly promote if not effect unanimity. With great Esteem & Regard I am Dr Sr Your most obt. Servt.

John Jay
