Sir,

The money due from the late William Tompkins for a tract of Land purchased by him of the Trustees of Colo Bernard Moore deceased has all been paid to me as Agent for the Administrators of the Estate of John Robinson Esqr deceased; the particular quantity of Land will be ascertained and described in a Deed to be prepared by Genl Jno Minor for your signature as surviving Trustee.

I am, with great respect, Sir Your most Obedt

Edm: Pendleton

RC (MHi); endorsed by TJ as received 7 July 1809 and so recorded in SJL. Enclosed in John Minor to TJ, 17 May 1809.

Edmund Pendleton (1745–1827) completed his studies at the College of William and Mary in 1764, two years after TJ, became an attorney, and served as a militia officer in the Revolutionary War (David John Mays, ed., The Letters and Papers of Edmund Pendleton, 1734–1803 [1967], esp. 2:402, 596, 670–1; Hamilton J. Eckenrode, Virginia Soldiers of the American Revolution [1912, repr. 1989], 1:346; Richmond Enquirer, 10 July 1827).

In 1770–71 TJ served as one of five trustees when Bernard Moore sold his property for the benefit of his creditors (PTJ description begins Julian P. Boyd, Charles T. Cullen, John Catanzariti, Barbara B. Oberg, and others, eds., The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, 1950– , 31 vols. description ends , 1:59–60, 64–5). Pendleton’s uncle Edmund Pendleton (1721–1803), an eminent Virginia jurist who helped raise his nephew, had administered the complicated estate of john robinson, the former speaker and treasurer of the colony of Virginia, and spent many years attempting to repair the damage caused by Robinson’s financial irregularities. Pendleton aided his uncle and later served as an agent to the administrators who oversaw the Robinson estate after the elder Pendleton’s death (Mays, ed., Pendleton Letters [1967], esp. 2:587, 589, 627).
