… I hope the idea of titles is sent to eternal repose. I know nothing which in my judgment would more strengthen opposition than the adoption of such a measure, giving countenance to all the suspicions hitherto forged only, of a tendency in the Goverment to fav’r Aristocratic principles.…

Printed extract (Stan. V. Henkels Catalogue No. 694 [1892]). The list probably kept by Peter Force (DLC: Madison Miscellany) notes that this letter consisted of one page and calendars it as follows: “Tardy progress of the new revenue system. Discrimination in tonnage dues. The question of titles.”
