Charles Washington the Two Mr Mercers and my General Character in business of that nature. I have the Honour to be Sir your Most Obedient Humble servant

B. Muse

ALS, DLC:GW.

1Although Muse gives no indication here of having received any communication from GW, a letter dated 4 Sept. 1784 from GW to Muse was advertised for sale in 1892 in Thomas Birch’s catalog no. 683. A letter of that date would have been written during the time that GW was seeing about his tenants in Berkeley County, where Muse was living. GW did not answer this letter of 12 Sept. until 3 Nov., explaining that it had not come to hand until “a few days ago.” At that time GW hired Muse who became GW’s agent for his tenanted lands in Frederick, Fauquier, Berkeley, and Loudoun counties.
