Head Quarters Middlebrook 21st May 1779.

I thought it necessary to transmit you the inclosed extract of a letter from Col. Brodhead, that you may be on your guard with respect to the design formed against the Indians under your care.1 I have directed Colonel Brodhead in a letter of this date, to meet them with an escort on their return for their better protection. It may be proper in this case, to communicate to him, the route you mean they should take. I am sir your most hble servt

LS, in James McHenry’s writing, DLC:GW; Df, DLC:GW; Varick transcript, DLC:GW. GW signed the cover of the LS, which was addressed to “George Morgan Esquire D.C. General at Philadelphia.” McHenry also wrote a note on the cover of the LS, reading, “The General requests Mr [John] Mitchel to have this letter sent to Mr Morgan as soon as it comes to hand.” Another note on the cover of the LS indicates that it was received on 23 May.
