From Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, [12 January 1792]

To James Madison

Thursday morning. [12 Jan. 1792]

Th:J. to J.M.

I received the inclosed late last night, and it is not in my power to see Mr. H. this morning. If you can with satisfaction to yourself broach to him what Monroe proposes, well, if not, it must take it’s chance.

RC (DLC: Madison Papers); addressed: “Mr. Madison”; when Madison received the letter back from TJ late in life, he added the following to “Thursday morning”: “Jany. 12. 1792” and wrote “Hawkins” above Mr. H. Not recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Monroe to TJ, [11] Jan. 1792.
