To James Madison from Mathew Carey, 28 February 1824

From Mathew Carey

Philada. Feb. 28. 1824

Dear Sir

By this mail I send you a copy of a recent pamphlet,1 which I beseech you by all your hopes of honour & reputation here, & of happiness hereafter, to read with attention—& should it convince you of the deleterious consequences of the miserable policy this Country pursues, that you will try to open the eyes of some of the influential members of Congress to the necessity of a radical change. Very respectfully, Your obt. hble. Servt

Mathew Carey

RC (DLC). Docketed by JM.

1This publication has not been identified, but it could have been any one of several substantial pamphlets on the question of the tariff written by Carey under the signature of “a Pennsylvanian” in 1824, including Fifty-one Substantial Reasons against Any Modification Whatever of the Existing Tariff (Philadelphia, 1824; Shoemaker description begins Richard H. Shoemaker, comp., A Checklist of American Imprints for 1820–1829 (11 vols.; New York, 1964–72). description ends 15661), and Examination of a Tract on the Alteration of the Tariff, Written by Thomas Cooper, M.D. (Philadelphia, 1824; Shoemaker description begins Richard H. Shoemaker, comp., A Checklist of American Imprints for 1820–1829 (11 vols.; New York, 1964–72). description ends 15657).
