To James Madison from John Shee, 21 September 1804 (Abstract)

§ From John Shee

21 September 1804, Philadelphia. “The proceedings of Congress respecting the claims of the Ilinois and Ouabache united land Companies1, leave them no other alternative than that proposed in the enclosed advertisement; which previous to its publication they wish to lay respectfully, before the President.”

RC and enclosure (DNA: RG 59, ML). RC 1 p.; docketed by Wagner as received 25 Sept. Signed by John Shee as “sole survivor &⟨c⟩.” For enclosure, see n. 1.

1The enclosure (3 pp.; docketed by Wagner) is a description of Indian lands purchased by the Illinois and Wabash companies in 1773 and 1775, with an additional paragraph giving public notice that lands in the Indiana Territory about to be offered for sale by the government included the property claimed by the companies, and adding that they intended “to bring the question of right between the United States and them before the highest judic[i]al tribunal for decision.” The U.S. government had already declared the claim invalid and held to that position (Carter, Territorial Papers, Indiana, 7:54 n. 23, 312, 406).
