From James Madison to the Senate, 6 December 1815

To the Senate

Washington Decr. 6th. 1815.

I lay before the Senate for their consideration and advice, as to a ratification, Treaties which have been concluded with the following Indian Tribes. …

I communicate also the letters from the Commissioners on the part of the United States relating to their proceedings on those occasions.1

1. JM enclosed the treaties negotiated with the following Indian nations over the summer of 1815: “The Iaway tribe, Kickapoo, Do., Poutawatamie, Siouxs of the lakes, Piankshaw Tribe, Siouxs of the river St Peters, Great and Little Osage Tribes, Yancton Tribe, Mahas, Fox Tribe, Teeton, Sac Nation, Kanzas Tribe, Cippewa, Ottawa, Potawatamie, Shawanoe, Wyandot, Miami, Delaware, Seneca”; and also copies of the correspondence received by the War Department from the commissioners to these nations, including the journal of the proceedings held at Detroit and Spring Wells between 8 Aug. and 8 Sept. 1815 (printed in ASP description begins American State Papers: Documents, Legislative and Executive, of the Congress of the United States … (38 vols.; Washington, 1832–61). description ends , Indian Affairs, 2:1–25).
