From Thomas Macon

July 30th. 1804

Dear Sir

Maj Hite informed me that you requested him to let me know that you would give two hundred acres of Land, from off Winslows tract for an interest which I had in your Fathers will,1 which I am willing to take. I shall be from home a few days, & when I return I will come and see you. I am Sir Your Most Ob Sert.

1. Macon was the husband of JM’s sister Sarah. For the legal difficulties involved in the settlement of James Madison Sr.’s estate, see PJM-SS description begins Robert J. Brugger et al., eds., The Papers of James Madison: Secretary of State Series (7 vols. to date; Charlottesville, Va., 1986–). description ends , 2:124–25 and n. 1. As part of the settlement, it was proposed that Macon receive “a part of Winslow’s land” (ibid., 4:72–73).
