Gentlemen,

I am requested by the Faculty to lay the inclosed letters1 before you, and to state that the Faculty have declined licensing the individual until they learn from you the amount of the emolument which will accrue to him in the event of his appointment. I have the honor to be Gentn obediently Yours

RC and enclosure (ViU: Special Collections). Addressed to the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia. For enclosure, see n. 1. The docket, in an unidentified hand, reads: “From the Faculty. Oct. 2. —26. Military Instructor.” Below, JM added: “referred to meeting in Decr.”

1. Dunglison enclosed a 22 September 1826 letter from William Matthews to the board proposing a military school within the University of Virginia and recommending himself to serve as the instructor.
