6 December 1804, “Barnys Hotel2 District of Columbia.” “I waited several Times this day at the Office of State to know your further pleasure not less than to perform the due Homage of my Respects and to acquaint you that I leave this place tomorrow morning early for New York where I will remain untill further Notices from you which permit me to say I hope will not be many days and from whence I will again have the Honor to address you with further Advice of my progress.”

1. Massachusetts Republican William Lyman (1755–1811) served in the American Revolution, in Shays’s Rebellion, and in the Massachusetts legislature. He was elected to the Third and Fourth Congresses (1793–97). On 11 Dec. 1804 he was named consul at London and died in office (, 1:476, 477).
2. Barney’s Columbian Inn in Georgetown was operated by John Holland Barney, the older brother of Commodore Joshua Barney (Records of the Columbia Historical Society 50 [1948–50]: 15, 19).
