From Alexander Hamilton to James Lovell, 29 November 1793

Treasury Department November 29th 1793

Sir

Various circumstances have prevented an earlier answer to your letter of the 22d of August last.1

The question referred to having been stated to the Attorney General, you will receive a copy of his opinion herewith enclosed,2 in which I concur.

1Although Lovell’s letter has not been found, a note in an unidentified handwriting on the cover of H’s letter to Lovell reads: “respectg. the burnt Vessel repaired or rebuilt at the Castle Island.”
