6The letter has been lost, but Wickes sketched the contents in a letter of Jan. 24 to the committee of secret correspondence (Naval Docs, VIII, 544–5): the commissioners directed him, when ice in the Loire prevented the Reprisal from leaving on its cruise, to go to Lorient and inspect three ships there that were offered for sale. See also Clark, Wickes, pp. 114–15.
