From Benjamin Franklin to Arthur Lee, 23 June 1780

To Arthur Lee

Copy: Library of Congress

Passy, 23 June 1780.

Sir,

I received the Letters you did me the honour of writing to me, the 23th.5 Inst: informing me of the Passport I had before given you being expired and desiring another. Inclosed I have the Honour of sending it to you.6

With great Respect, I am sir, your most obedient and most humble Servant

BF.

Honble. A. Lee Esq.

[Note numbering follows the Franklin Papers source.]

5Actually the 13th, above.

6We have not located the passport. The present letter was, as far as we know, the last communication between BF and Lee until 1786. Lee’s return voyage to the United States aboard the Alliance was far from comfortable, according to an Oct. 30, 1780, letter he wrote James Warren: Mass. Hist. Soc. Collections, LXXIII (1925), 142–4.
