Tobias Lear to Henry Knox

By the Presidets Command—T. Lear has the honor to transmit to the Secy of War, for his inspection, a lettr from Govr Moultrie, enclosing a deposition relative to the murder of certain Cherokee Inds by a party of Geo[r]gians in Oct. last.1 And a lettr from Colo. Mentges respectg his late office & desiring another appointmt.2

2. Francis Mentges’s letter to GW of January 1793 has not been found. According to GW’s executive journal, Mentges desired “the President to appoint him Inspector General or to any other suitable post in the Army” (JPP, description begins Dorothy Twohig, ed. The Journal of the Proceedings of the President, 1793–1797. Charlottesville, Va., 1981. description ends 41). Mentges, a Revolutionary War veteran from Pennsylvania, previously had made similar requests for appointment either to the military or the War Department (Mentges to GW, 21 April, 1 July 1789). On 30 Aug. 1790 Mentges wrote GW to accept “the Appointment your Excellency was pleased to honor me with” (DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters). Neither the 1790 appointment nor any subsequent one has been identified.
