3This undated letter urges BF to attend a dinner for “Les Commissionaires” at Le Roy’s home in Passy. Because of the references to commissioners, to BF’s fragile health and immobility, and to Le Roy’s entertaining at his Passy residence, the invitation most likely dates from the spring or summer of 1784. BF and Le Roy served on two commissions that year: the Académie des sciences commission to examine the installation of lightning rods on powder magazines, and the royal commission to investigate animal magnetism. We tentatively date this invitation on the earliest of the possible Mondays associated with the former investigation. April 19 was the Monday before the lightning-rod commission submitted its report, published below under the date of April 24.

4On another occasion, WTF issued an invitation to Le Roy and “the commissioners” to dine at BF’s house. Le Roy answered this now-missing note, writing to WTF in English on an unspecified “Thursday morning”: he would inform the others and was sure that they would all be pleased to accept this invitation to dine with BF and WTF the following day. APS.
