Tobias Lear to Henry Knox

United States March 1st 1791.

By the President’s command, T. Lear has the honor to transmit to the Secretary of War the enclosed letter, which has just come to the President’s hands; signed by a number of the Inhabitants of Washington County in the State of Pennsylvania, expressing their apprehensions of the depredations of the Indians in that quarter.1

The President requests that the secretary will give the subject that consideration which it may merit, and report to the President his opinion of what ought to be done on the occasion.2

Tobias Lear

S. P. U. S.

LB, DLC:GW.

1The enclosed letter has not been identified.

2No response from Knox to this particular message from the frontier has been found. By a letter of 10 Mar. 1791, Knox authorized the county lieutenants in several exposed frontier counties of Virginia and Pennsylvania, including Washington County, to employ rangers for their defense (see Henry Knox to GW, 14 Mar. 1791, Enclosure II).
