1. “Your letters of the 14 and 16 instant,” Knox wrote Wayne on 24 Nov., “have been received and submitted to the president” (Knopf, Wayne, description begins Richard C. Knopf, ed. Anthony Wayne, a Name in Arms: Soldier, Diplomat, Defender of Expansion Westward of a Nation; The Wayne-Knox-Pickering-McHenry Correspondence. Pittsburgh, 1960. description ends 139). Wayne’s letter of 14 Nov. has not been identified. His letter to Knox of 16 Nov. included a review of the provisions needed for the army in 1793 and of past difficulties in obtaining and distributing provisions, which had induced Wayne “to order the deposits of provision in advance.” Wayne also wrote: “we have a report that the Cornplanter has returned from the Council of the Hostile Indians at Au Glaize—& that he is expected at Fort Franklin about this time in consequence of which I immediately dispatched Mr. Rosecrantz to meet & invite him with the New Arrow & red Jacket to visit Philadelphia agreably to your desire in a former letter” (ibid., 133–135).
