The enclosed drawing has not been identified, but TJ’s “Catalogue of Paintings &ca. at Monticello” includes, as item No. 85, “the President’s House at Washington, in water colours by King.” A week after sending this letter, the artist offered a proposal to publish, by subscription, “Two Views in the city of Washington,” one of the President’s House and executive offices and the other of the Capitol, “as they were in the Spring of the year 1801” (MS in ViU, undated, in TJ’s hand; National Magazine; or Cabinet of the United States [Washington, D.C.], 19 Nov. 1801; Stein, Worlds description begins Susan R. Stein, The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, New York, 1993 description ends , 84).
