Bordentown, 1 Feb. 1791. In view of TJ’s 1 Dec. 1790 letter, which arrived yesterday, he wishes to be informed of openings in any federal department other than the Department of State.

The following letters also pertain to applications or recommendations for miscellaneous federal offices: (1) Allan B. Magruder to TJ, Georgetown, 1 Nov. 1791, reminding him of his promise to ascertain whether there were any clerical openings in the Treasury or War Departments (RC in DLC: Washington Papers, Applications for Office; endorsed by TJ as received 3 Nov. 1791 and so recorded in SJL). (2) Arthur Emmerson to TJ, Portsmouth, Virginia, 25 Nov. 1791, recommending the claims of the bearer, Thomas Wishart, and applying for the chaplain’s appointment at the marine hospital there (RC in MHi; endorsed by TJ as received 29 Nov. 1791 and so recorded in SJL). (3) TJ to George Washington, 7 July 1792, enclosing David Meade Randolph’s 30 June 1792 letter recommending John Waller Johnston as keeper of the Cape Henry lighthouse (RC in DNA: RG 59, MLR; addressed: “The President of the United States”; endorsed by Tobias Lear; not recorded in SJL; see also Vol. 24: 708n). (4) Daniel Gaines to TJ, Wilkes County, Georgia, 22 Nov. 1792, recommending Captain Peleg Greene as commander of an additional cutter to cruise off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina (RC in DLC: Washington Papers, Applications for Office; endorsed by TJ as received 29 Dec. 1792 and so recorded in SJL). (5) Arthur Emmerson to TJ, Portsmouth, Virginia, 15 Dec. 1792, applying for the chaplain’s appointment at the marine hospital in Washington, Virginia, and recommending Bevard Jones as steward there (RC in same; endorsed by TJ as received 1 Jan. 1793 and so recorded in SJL). (6) Samuel Sterett to TJ, Baltimore, 8 Aug. 1793, soliciting TJ’s support for his letter of this date to the President applying for the surveyorship of the port of Baltimore (RC in same; at foot of text: “Tho. Jefferson, Esq.”; endorsed by TJ as received 10 Aug. 1793 and so recorded in SJL).
