MS (MHi); entirely in TJ’s hand.

As TJ’s correspondence with his daughters and with Thomas Mann Randolph from February through May 1798 indicates, during that period TJ wanted William Davenport of Albemarle County to see to the preparation and installation of sheathing and shingles to roof the main house at Monticello, and then to do the same for the floor planking. Davenport was to cut the roofing materials from timber on TJ’s Pouncey’s tract property. Although by November 1798 TJ had given the roofing work to James McGee, Davenport still furnished planks for the floors. An entry for the 12 Aug. 1797 transaction in the account above is Davenport’s earliest appearance in TJ’s financial memoranda. TJ and Davenport continued to have a variety of transactions at least until late 1800, TJ noting in his financial memoranda under 15 Nov. of that year that “On settlement with Wm. Davenport for sawing, I am this day in his debt£65–2–10 ½” (MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:992, 1001, 1027, 1029; Martha Jefferson Randolph to TJ, 8 Feb. 1799; Craven Peyton to TJ, 6 Nov. 1801). None of the correspondence between TJ and Davenport has been found. Letters from TJ of 14, 22 Feb., 3, and 9 May 1798 are recorded in SJL, as well as letters Davenport wrote to TJ on 5 Mch. (received 13 Mch.) and 22 Apr. 1798 (received from Charlottesville on 1 May). Also missing but recorded in SJL is a letter from TJ to Davenport of 7 July 1799 concerning an order from TJ to George Jefferson for $200 payable to Davenport (see also TJ to George Jefferson, 12 July 1799; MB description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends , 2:1003).

The first purchase of beef recorded above was from William McGehee of Albemarle County; the purchase on 5 Oct. 1797 was from Charles McGehee (MB, description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends 2:970, 971). For the transaction involving Francis Walker, see TJ’s letter to Walker of 21 Dec. 1797.

Thomas Carr, a merchant in Charlottesville, was a distributor for TJ’s nails (MB, description begins James A. Bear, Jr., and Lucia C. Stanton, eds., Jefferson’s Memorandum Books: Accounts, with Legal Records and Miscellany, 1767–1826, Princeton, 1997, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson, Second Series description ends 2:939). Letters from TJ to him dated 4 Jan. 1796 and 19 July 1798, recorded in SJL, are now missing.

1Entry written over partially erased text. Below this entry TJ wrote and canceled: “30. to assumed to F. Walker for half a beef 228 ℔ @ 4d 3–16–0.”
