Gentlemen of the Senate

I nominate John Spence West, whose term as Marshal of North Carolina expired on the 10th. inst. to be reappointed Marshal of North Carolina.

Meriwether Lewis brought TJ’s nomination of john spence west to the Senate on Monday, 20 Dec. The Senate read, confirmed, and sent notice of the renewal to the president the same day. West’s new commission “for a term of four years” is dated 10 Dec., the day his old commission expired (FC in Lb in DNA: RG 59, MPTPC; JEP description begins Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States…to the Termination of the Nineteenth Congress, Washington, D.C., 1828, 3 vols. description ends , 1:426).
