To George Washington from Thomas Jefferson, 27 December 1793

From Thomas Jefferson

Dec. 27. 93.

Th: Jefferson has the honor to inclose to the President the translation of a letter he received last night from Messrs Viar & Jaudenes and which he supposes should be communicated to the legislature as being in answer to one communicated to them.1

AL, DNA: RG 59, Miscellaneous Letters; LB, DNA: RG 59, George Washington’s Correspondence with His Secretaries of State.

1The enclosed letter of 26 Dec. from José de Jaudenes and José Ignacio de Viar rebutted American complaints about the behavior of the governor of Louisiana, particularly in regard to Indian relations on the southwest frontier (Jefferson Papers description begins Julian P. Boyd et al., eds. The Papers of Thomas Jefferson. 41 vols. to date. Princeton, N.J., 1950–. description ends , 27:622–25). Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr., replied to Jefferson on this date, returning the letter and informing him “that the President thinks it should be communicated to Congress—& wishes copies to be prepared for that purpose” (DLC: Jefferson Papers). GW submitted a copy with his first message to the United States Senate and House of Representatives of 30 December.
