From Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 15 December 1793

To George Washington

Dec. 15. 1793.

Th: Jefferson has the honor to return to the President the letter of Mr. Rumaine praying to be relieved from duties on the wrecks of fortune with which he escaped from St. Domingo. Th:J. has put the letter of the same person to himself, with those of Mr. Genet into the hands of Mr. Murray, to make them the foundation of a bill of relief.

RC (DNA: RG 59, MLR); addressed: “The President of the US.”; endorsed by Bartholomew Dandridge, Jr. Tr (Lb in same, SDC). Not recorded in SJL. Enclosure: Either Jean Louis Du Rumaine to Washington, or Du Rumaine to Washington and Congress, Edenton, North Carolina, 15 Nov. 1793, requesting Congress to grant him a remission of the tonnage duty he paid here after being obliged in July 1793 to flee with his wife from Saint-Domingue because of the slave revolt there (RCs in DNA: RG 59, MLR).

Du Rumaine’s 15 Nov. 1793 letter to TJ, recorded in SJL as received 2 Dec. 1793, has not been found. bill of relief: see note to Cabinet Opinions on Edmond Charles Genet and James King, 7 Dec. 1793.
